Love or star-struck or else stupid
In one interpretation of this word we note that those in love are said to be blind - or perhaps more accurately incapable of summoning up enough intellect to see that they are acting like a fool whilst looking like an idiot and most likely missing the obvious where the object of their affection is involved.
This describes also an individual in a characteristically Cypriot state of arrogant bemusement that leads the affected person to perform in an apparently grossly delusional or mentally subnormal fashion.
It can be difficult to differentiate the fachismenos from the genuinely neurologically numbed.
One diagnostic feature of this bedazzlement, as distinct from classical idiocy, is the somewhat narcissistic* attitude of affected individuals, especially among the population under the age of 40 years.
Gucci or Yves St Laurent clothes worn to go to the supermarket, whilst escorted by a shabby house servant who carries the fachimenos' mobile phone and calls them "Mahdam".
Oft repeated idiomatic speech sequences such as "Don't you know who I am?" or "Do you realize who you are talking to?" or other statements that alone might argue delusions of grandeur.
Notable is also general behaviour so egocentrically attention seeking and affected as to require therapy, ideally over a number of years and better still in a secure institution.
Lobotomy is another tempting alternative but there are doubts as to how one would reliably find a brain in such individuals anyway, never mind it's frontal lobe.
Above 40 years old this obsession tends to taper off a little and the more obvious symptoms begin to subside. Up until then, however, throwing a brick in any direction anywhere in Nicosia (however unenthusiastically) will hit at least five fachimeni (pl.), but as long as you can convince them the brick was hand crafted by Atelier Georgio Armani © and how in Milano they are all doing it, even Sylvester Stallone, they will readily forgive you.
After 40, the truly long-term fachimeni metamorphose into zoppos. This is probably why the word fachimenos may also be used to indicate hapless or stupid in some situations since, whatever the subtleties of motivation involved as this is assuredly how they appear.
*Narcissus in Greek mythology was a handsome youth, the son of the river god Cephissus. He cruelly refused to accept Echo's love; she was so humiliated that she hid in a cave & wasted away until nothing was left of her but her voice.
To punish Narcissus, the avenging goddess Nemesis made Narcissus fall hopelessly in love with his own beautiful face as he saw it reflected in a pool. As he gazed in fascination, unable to remove himself from his image, he gradually pined away.
At the place where his body had lain grew a beautiful flower, honoring the name and memory of Narcissus (although I cannot imagine why).
